Eileen Callahan, public information officer and media relations expert, has extensive experience in planning and
implementing communications programs for more than 30 years. Eileen was responsible for ensuring the visibility of the
University of California San Diego Medical Center with the public and the academic and research communities. As
spokesperson and media coordinator for UCSD, she worked with print and electronic media including ABC, CBS, Fox and
NBC news, Larry King, CNN, Good Morning America, the Wall Street Journal, local radio and television stations as well as
national and international media markets.Eileen is the Public Information Officer for the Disaster Medical Assistance Team
in San Diego coordinating news media interviews during team deployments. The Team has been deployed to all major
disasters including Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans and the terrorist bombing of the twin towers in New York City.
San Diego native Janine Nakama first joined KGTV-ABC more than 27 years ago. During the last decade she produced and
wrote for the award-winning “Staying Healthy” report, a medical and science series. Janine’s stories have resulted in
numerous first-place awards from the Society of Professional Journalists, San Diego Press Club, the Associated Press and
other respected journalism/press related organizations. (See Awards Page). Her broadcast career has encompassed a
wide range of responsibilities including producing and writing news stories, documentaries, and investigative reports with
local and national appeal. In 2005 she was awarded the prestigious California Endowment Health Journalism Fellowship
from the Annenberg School of Communication at the University of Southern California (USC) and is currently a 2009
California Endowment Health Journalism Senior Fellow.
